******************************************************************* FOCUS: LEARNING OPPORTUNITY - DON'T MISS IT!
Discipline: All five disciplines of the learning organization

Each year for the last five years I've attended the Systems Thinking in Action Conference* and been inspired, stimulated, stretched and affirmed. I've been to lots of conferences and this one shines above the rest. Here are some of the things I especially like:

1) Keynote speakers are world class.
2) Practical workshops and skill-based sessions - most actually deliver!
3) Reports from the field - real life stories from innovative companies/organizations
4) Networking with a remarkable community of global practitioners

Two years ago I attended an STA workshop where the Singapore police force described their transformation from a repressive, patriarchal hierarchy to a learning community. The enthusiasm of the individual team members as they described the actual steps in their empowerment moved me; their expanded vision - to become a learning nation - inspires me still.

People I've met at STA Conferences have become colleagues, friends and mentors: A businessman from India, a healthcare administrator from Australia, a consultant from Seattle, a mentor from Ann Arbor.

The conference is put on by pros...Pegasus Communications. They orchestrate it to promote learning at every turn. Each year I leave feeling energized, re-inspired, and with at least one concrete idea to try and one important new contact.

The 2001 Systems Thinking in Action Conference, entitled HARNESSING THE POWER OF ORGANIZATIONAL COMPLEXITY, will be held October 24-26, in Atlanta, Georgia. I encourage you to come.

Pegasus encourages "teams" to attend by offering a discount. They have agreed that Fresh Views readers could constitute a virtual "team", eligible for a discount, without the need to actually operate as a team. There is an additional discount if you register by September 14. If you are interested, please e-mail me. In the meantime, check out conference details at (Click on final conference brochure in right column for complete details of speakers and workshops.)

Each month FRESH VIEWS focuses on a single topic, relates it to one of the five disciplines of a learning community, and offers a coaching tip and a follow-up telegathering. Please forward it to friends and colleagues. My purpose in writing FRESH VIEWS is to nurture, prod and encourage readers to think and talk about these topics with their families, friends and colleagues. Mine is only one view. Multiple conversations may deliver us to insights only hinted at here. Such a process sustains the vitality of learning relationships, learning families, learning organizations and learning communities.
