FOCUS: EFFORTLESSNESS
Disciplines: Personal Mastery, Mental Models

"Relax your way into the pose. If you muscle
your way into it, you'll hurt yourself."
Ruth Rittenhouse, yoga teacher

When I have lots to do, I often get weary IN ADVANCE!

There IS another way, and sometimes I'm able to do it. I think of this "other way" as EFFORTLESSNESS. It is such a better way to move through life that I recommend it to you. It involves shifts in both doing and thinking. Here are some I can identify:

SHIFTS IN DOING:

1) Do what's easy, what you're good at. When you run into hard stuff, get someone to do it with you. Sing, joke, take breaks.
2) Make a list of what you want to accomplish to get focused. Then don't look at the list....move to things you feel like doing.
3) Chunk a task into small pieces. I cleaned up an impossible basement in 30 minute bursts.
4) Follow your energy. STOP when you're tired, even if it feels like you MUST keep going. Resting for 10-30 minutes will refresh you.
5) If you want to do something that takes huge, sustained effort, plan down time for recovery afterward.

SHIFTS IN THINKING:

6) Recognize that a great deal of what is worthwhile is easy and fun, rather than saying to yourself "everything worthwhile is hard."
7) Be in discovery mode rather than drudgery mode. Instead of "pre-paving" for effort and exhaustion, "pre-pave" for ease and adventure.
8) When you find yourself thinking negatively, (worried, fearful, mad, bored, frustrated) do something immediately to switch the direction of your energy. Smile, laugh, think of something or someone funny, think of something you want or want to do, think of someone you love....anything to reverse the direction of your energy. Do this many times a day if needed.
9) Be open to the outcome - things might turn out differently (even better!) than you'd imagined.

The irony for me is that just as relaxing my mind and muscles allows me to get into amazing yoga poses, when I'm in "effortless" mode, I accomplish more and am happier to boot. Try it.

Each month FRESH VIEWS focuses on a single topic, relates it to one of the five disciplines of a learning community, and offers a coaching tip and a follow-up telegathering. Please forward it to friends and colleagues. My purpose in writing FRESH VIEWS is to nurture, prod and encourage readers to think and talk about these topics with their families, friends and colleagues. Mine is only one view. Multiple conversations may deliver us to insights only hinted at here. Such a process sustains the vitality of learning relationships, learning families, learning organizations and learning communities.
