FOCUS: Perfecting Environments
Disciplines: Personal mastery, Systems thinking

"This place is scarrrreeeee!"
Uncle Bud on entering Costco for the first time at age 77.

Try this: Reframe all of your visions and goals, personal and professional, in terms of the environments required for them to happen. Then set to work creating those environments.

This is a refreshing systems view. It's the reason a coach might suggest you clean a closet when you're trying to solve a relationship problem. It acknowledges that changing one part of a system affects the others.

I once had a long talk with Thomas Leonard, the late founder of CoachU, about this possibility. He'd come up with 7 key environments we all live in. The seven are: physical environment, nature/out-of-doors, environment of ideas and information, feeling environment, energy, people and time environments. The more you optimize all of them, we agreed, the better your life will be.

COACHING QUESTIONS, using Thomas' environments:
1. Physical environment: How are you affected by light, temperature, season? What small changes can you make in your living space that will make a big difference? What uncomfortable places can you avoid?
2. Nature, out-of-doors: What outdoor place that you like can you visit routinely?
3. Ideas & information: How can you put positive and inspiring ideas in your path regularly? What can you stop reading? How can you stop being exposed to negative ideas and information?
4. Feeling environment: What are you grateful for? What negative emotion or habit are you willing to drop?
5. Energy environments: When and where are you energized? Drained? What changes can you make to spend more time where you are energized and less where you are drained?
6. People environments: Who do you enjoy being with? Who drags you down? Where can you find more people you enjoy?
7. Time environments: Which times of day work best for which activities in your life? How can you build routines that pay attention to your time and energy variations?

Each month FRESH VIEWS focuses on a single topic, relates it to one of the five disciplines of a learning community, and offers a coaching tip and a follow-up telegathering. Please forward it to friends and colleagues. My purpose in writing FRESH VIEWS is to nurture, prod and encourage readers to think and talk about these topics with their families, friends and colleagues. Mine is only one view. Multiple conversations may deliver us to insights only hinted at here. Such a process sustains the vitality of learning relationships, learning families, learning organizations and learning communities.
